Grant will be vital to foodbank campaign

FAMILIES in Worcester struggling to afford food this summer holiday are being supported by cash grants from Western Power Distribution (WPD).

The electricity network operator has awarded grants totalling £73,000 from its Community Matters Fund to charities, local councils and community groups across the West Midlands to help families struggling to put food on the table.

During the school holidays, there is always higher demand at foodbanks, often from families which rely on term-time free school meals and research in 2019 highlighted there were three million children nationally at risk of ‘holiday hunger’.

Amongst the beneficiaries from the fund is Worcester Foodbank which has been awarded £1,300 to provide vegetarian pre-packed cooking kits for local households.

Ruth Allsop, operations co-ordinator at the Worcester Foodbank, said: “The grant from Western Power Distribution will help us to provide ready-made parcels and recipes for our clients to cook a meal for their families.

“Lots of our clients tell us how they would love to cook meals from scratch, but due to funding and storage, we have not been able to supply all the ingredients needed to do so.

“This funding will help us to provide the food, equipment and guidance to help our clients get excited about cooking and we can’t wait to get started with our ‘Let’s Get Cooking with Worcester Foodbank’ project.”
