Ex officer is banned from force

Worcester Editorial 28th Dec, 2021   0

A FORMER West Mercia Police officer who tragically caused the death of a much-loved father has been banned from serving in the police force again.

Jamie Holloway resigned from his job in August after he was found guilty of causing death by careless, or inconsiderate, driving.

Worcester Crown Court heard how he crashed into the back of David Shaw’s Ford Fiesta while responding to a 999 call on the A449 in May 2018. Mr Shaw suffered catastrophic injuries on his trip out to refuel his car and died on June 11 – just five days before his 54th birthday.

In September, Mr Holloway received an eight-month sentence, suspended for two years, was disqualified from driving for 12 months and was ordered to complete 200 hours unpaid work, and to pay costs.

Despite leaving the force, his actions were the subject of a special case hearing chaired by West Mercia Police Chief Constable Pippa Mills.

The hearing ruled Mr Holloway breached the Standards of Professional Behaviour in relation to discreditable conduct to such an extent it would have been deemed gross misconduct.

Mr Holloway would have been dismissed if he had not already resigned, according to the panel chair.

He will now be added to the College of Policing Barred List. The hearing is subject to the usual appeal process.

Chief Constable Mills said: “Officers take professionally judged risks, day in and day out, in their commitment to protect the public from harm.

“In the vast majority of cases those risks are well judged, and help protect the public. However, it is right that police officers are accountable for their actions.

“Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Mr Shaw.”
