Parades set to return to pay respects to the fallen

Worcester Editorial 13th Nov, 2021 Updated: 13th Nov, 2021   0

CITY residents are being invited to remember all those who gave their lives for peace and freedom at Worcester’s main Remembrance Sunday commemoration.

This year’s event on Sunday will allow the Faithful City to once again pay its respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice both in the two world wars and subsequent conflicts.

A service will take place at Worcester Cathedral from 10am with a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial in the cathedral grounds beginning at 10.55am

This will include the two minutes’ silence at 11am, which will end with the firing of a gun in the cathedral grounds, followed by the playing of the Last Post.

A large number of city residents are expected to gather to witness the wreath-laying ceremony.

Following a severely scaled back programme to mark Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday last year, due to the pandemic, parades and services are returning to the county this year.

Coun Rob Adams, chairman of the Worcestershire Armed Forces Partnership, said: “It is wonderful so many of our communities are able to revert back to usual commemorations with parades returning across the county.

“It is a really poignant opportunity to be able to come together and pay our respects to those who have lost their lives fighting for their country.”

A number of road closures will be in place across the county in order for parades to go ahead

St John’s Street and Swanpool Walk in Worcester will be closed on Sunday (November 14) from 10.30am to 10.50am for the St John’s Remembrance Sunday Parade.

Queen Street, St Swithin’s Street, the High Street to Worcester Cathedral, the A44 Deansway and All Saint’s Road will all be closed for the wreath-laying ceremony on Sunday morning.
