WORCESTER’S MP Robin Walker writes for the Observer…
LAST week saw the Chancellor deliver the Autumn Budget and I was delighted that the stronger growth than anticipated and strength of recovery has allowed extra spend on health and education. There are some crucial steps being taken in this budget to invest across public services, drive up apprenticeships and support further economic and social recovery from the pandemic.
I am also delighted with extra help on business rates which can support the continued recovery of the High Street and even stronger economy in the future. Despite the numerous challenges caused by the pandemic, this budget showed that we are getting on with the job and delivering on the priorities of the British people.
COP26 took place in Glasgow this week and I am proud that under the UK’s COP26 Presidency, countries have pledged to accelerate coal phase out and rapidly scale up deployment of clean power generation, which marks a significant turning point in the global transition to clean sources of energy.
We are the responsible for a sustainable future and I am pleased that the UK is leading the world in moving away from fossil fuels and it’s fantastic to see so many other countries making that commitment at COP26 in Glasgow.
As we enter the season of Remembrance, it was great honour to lay a wreath at the Gheluvelt Remembrance Service in Worcester and I would like to say well done to all involved and I was glad the rain largely held off for the service.
