Living independently the aim of Shared Lives work

PEOPLE in Worcestershire are being encouraged to become Shared Lives providers – a service enabling adults with complex needs to live independently.

Providers are professional carers who open their homes to adults with learning difficulties, disabilities, mental health conditions, physical disabilities or dementia.

They offer long-term care, support and accommodation to individuals who choose to live with them.

Providers are self-employed and receive a fee dependent on the level of care and support needed.

The service is often described as ‘foster care for adults with support needs’ and Worcestershire County Council has run its own scheme since 2004.

Councillor Adrian Hardman, cabinet member for adult social care at the authority, said: “Our priority is to ensure people can live healthy and independent lives for as long as possible.

“The Shared Lives service means adults with additional support needs can live in a caring family home and reap all the benefits from that.

“So if you are perhaps looking for a change, I’d urge you to consider becoming a Shared Lives provider and make a real, positive difference to someone’s life.”

Karen Having said she became a Shared Lives provider to help individuals ‘regardless of their background or circumstances’. “I have a great time with them,” she said, “it’s about sharing the individual’s interests.”

Two virtual events will be held next month for people wanting to learn more and hear from current providers.

The first will be on April 16 from 10.30am to midday, and the other on April 22, 6pm to 7.30pm.
