Finishing touches to be applied to bridge

Worcester Editorial 3rd Mar, 2021   0

THE FINISHING touches to the revamped Sabrina Bridge have been put in place this week as highways chiefs complete the ambitious project.

Following extensive works to install the new main span of the bridge, which had been removed as part of a major refurbishment, Sabrina Bridge reopened at the end of January.

The final works include installation of bridge dampers which will reduce movement of the bridge, completion of works for the step access on both sides of the river and landscaping works.

The installation work was unable to be done ahead of the opening last month due to a delay in receiving the parts from the supplier due to Covid-19 related issues.

Coun Alan Amos, cabinet member for Highways, said: “Since opening at the end of January, it’s great to see that Sabrina Bridge has been very well used by pedestrians and cyclists and we’ve had really positive feedback about the improvements.

“These final works, which we alluded to when we announced the opening, will be the finishing touches to the extensive refurbishment which has made a drastic improvement to this very well used river crossing. We’re planning to get the bridge back open before schools are set to return on Monday (March 8).

“The improvements to this bridge are part of our wider plans to enhance walking and cycling routes, not only in Worcester but throughout the county.”

The major refurbishment of the bridge includes the complete replacement of the steel for the bridge span, a brand-new composite deck which will be easier to maintain and have increased longevity, repainted handrails, ramps, stairs and main mast, as well as increased handrail height.
