THE Police and Crime Commissioner for West Mercia Police is calling on Worcestershire organisations to ‘turn the tide on domestic abuse’.
A key part of the Government’s new Domestic Abuse Bill is Drive Project’s ‘Call to Action’ campaign which urges the Government to lay out a strategy to tackle domestic abuse.
The national project is asking for more funding and to allow voluntary groups to be empowered to hold perpetrators to account.
The strategy aims to protect victims of domestic abuse and prevent it from happening in the first place.
PCC John Campion, who is backing the bill, is hoping other organisations will follow suit.
He added he was proud to support and work with Drive, which is now running two perpetrator programmes within West Mercia.
“Domestic abuse is still the major crime and cause of harm in our community,” said Mr Campion.
“It is happening behind closed doors, with victims not being safe in their own homes.
“As we progress through the final stages of this important bill, the Government has the opportunity to make important changes now before it’s too late and we find the already shocking statistics increase.
“I have made a commitment to protect victims and survivors of crime and, as a society, the best way to do this is to effectively target those causing the harm.”
More than 1.9 million adults in the UK experienced domestic abuse last year.
