HEART of Worcestershire College (HoW College) students embarked on a journey over the rainbow recently for a colourful lockdown project.

The Level 2 Hair & Makeup Artistry students went head-to-head with the Level 3 Theatrical & Media Makeup students in a department competition, to see who could create the best overall look inspired by the theme ‘Over the Rainbow’.

Within this task, students could use only what they had available to them at home to get creative with their hair, makeup and costumes. Additionally, each student had to take the time to plan a fundraiser that also followed the theme; considering everything from target audiences and marketing, to venue, prices and promotion.

HoW College’s Hair and Media Makeup and Theatrical Makeup Subject Tutor, Gail Tyrer, said: “I would just like to say how proud I am of both Hair and Media Makeup and Theatrical Makeup students for the quality of inspiration and skills shown.

“Some students did not have all their kit and equipment and had to improvise which is a skill required of a successful Makeup Artist.

The commitment, motivation and inspiration shown over the last few difficult months has been outstanding, and their work is a credit to them. Well done!”

The staff certainly had a difficult time choosing a winner from the colourful, creative and professional submissions. However, there could only be one winner and Level 3 Theatrical and Media Makeup student, Cate Richardson, won the staff vote following her submission that was dedicated to the NHS.

Commenting on her success, Cate said: “I really loved the idea of this ‘Over the Rainbow’ theme and I wanted to take this opportunity to show my deep respect for the NHS. At such a distressing time, I feel it was a lovely way to shed light on the topic, highlighting that life will be brighter after this pandemic.”
