Rallying call to fight plans for a care home on the ‘Donkey Field’

AN APPEAL has been launched to ensure future generations can enjoy a picturesque area of Claines after plans for a new 80-bed care home were revealed.

Lib Dem Councillor Mel Allcott has called on residents across the city to sign her petition against the plans submitted by Northwick Developments Ltd for a two-storey £9 million care home off Northwick Road in Northwick.

A plan for a 74-bed care home on the remaining part of the old park and ride site in John Comyn Drive off Droitwich Road, less than a mile away from Old Northwick Farm, was submitted to Worcester City Council in January and speaking to the Observer Coun Allcott questioned the need for two care homes so close together.

“I think it is outrageous a developer has put forward a proposal for a care home, on as irreplaceable green field site, known for its diverse and rare ecology, medieval history and stunning landscape view. The land is not even in the current SWDP,” she said.

“Furthermore, there are plans for a care home on the old Park and Ride site, just a stone’s throw away. Of most concern, the area floods, can it be any more dangerous, for people who need to reside in a care home.”

Coun Allcott said she was dismayed by the latest planning application submitted on the site affectionately known to local residents as the ‘Donkey Field’.

“Bearing in mind Wychavon District Council granted planning permission for the Bellway development in Claines and the ongoing problems ever since build commenced, how can one feel anything but very concerned,” she said.

“An unused bus route, part of Bellway plans, home to a large gate to nowhere, in plain view from my front garden. New residents with financial problems resulting from unexpected maintenance charges, to name a few.

“Many generations have enjoyed this area. I want to ensure future generations do too,” she added.
