Tudor staff celebrate top award

Worcester Editorial 4th Oct, 2019   0

STAFF at one of Worcester’s landmarks are celebrating after winning a major honour at the fourth annual West Midlands Museum Development Volunteer Awards.

Members of the Tudor House Museum board of trustees were on hand to pick up the award and defeated the challenge of Compton Verney, ThinkTank and Winterbourne House and Garden at the ceremony in the heart of Birmingham.

This award and the independent judges who made the final decision recognised the hard work and dedication of the trustees of Worcester Heritage and Amenity Trust (WHAT) at the historic Friar Street site.

In 2003, Worcester City Council closed the then Museum of Local Life due to funding issues before a small group of volunteers formed a group campaigning for it to stay.

“When that failed, they decided to take on the running of the museum themselves, forming Worcester Heritage and Amenity Trust and taking on this huge project,” said manager Tonia Collett.

“15 years later, the museum is going from strength to strength. The volunteer team now number nearly 80 and embraces a range of ages, genders, abilities and backgrounds.

“Their stamina and dedication has been inspirational with the WHAT board leading the way, planning for the museum so we can say that our next 15 years are secure,” she added.
