WOLVES and England legend Steve Bull hit the target for Help for Heroes and helped raise almost £3,000 for the armed forces charity.
Local co-ordinator for Help for Heroes, Neil Roberts teamed up with the local football icon for an evening at Worcestershire Cricket Club which also saw comedian Bob Webb take to the stage for a comedic flavour.
A silent auction held by MC Steve Saul, the owner of Route 39 sporting memorabilia raised £175 to the evening while a quick game and money spinner of ‘heads and tails’ generated £300 for the pot.
After a two-course meal, ‘Bully’ took the floor to share tales of how he arrived in football and of his playing days and career which also saw a short question and answer session before the final whistle.
A surprise end to the evening saw Neil’s 15-year-old daughter commandeer the microphone to deliver a heart-warming tribute to her father to ensure no dry eyes in the house.
The evening raised £2,920 for Help for Heroes and speaking after the event, Neil said the support of friends, family, and new acquaintances was ‘absolutely overwhelming’.
“Having Steve Bull only added to the delight of the evening. A genuine and friendly chap, a legend and now freeman of the city of Wolverhampton, it was great to receive and look after him for the evening.
“Although our service personnel may not visibly be involved in conflicts such as Afghanistan anymore, it does not absolve the charity from current and future obligations, and it is crucial that the charity remains at the forefront of the public eye.”
“I remain in awe of the continued support I receive from close friends and family in my fund-raising schemes and I was blown away when my normally shy and retiring daughter grabbed the microphone to say thanks to her dear old dad.”
