CITY councillor Lynn Denham has been chosen as Labour’s candidate for the next General Election.
The Cathedral councillor was the choice of Labour Party members on Saturday in a vote from an all-woman shortlist following hustings at Worcester Sixth Form College.
She replaces Labour’s former Parliamentary candidate for Worcester, Mandy Richards, who was dropped last year, after it emerged she had made ‘false and vexatious’ claims against MI5 and others.
Coun Denham is expected to now fight Conservative incumbent Robin Walker for the right to be Worcester MP at the next election.
Coun Denham has lived in Worcester for nearly 30 years, working as a hospital pharmacist and senior NHS manager. She has been a Worcester City Councillor since 2012 and was cabinet member for sustainable communities.
Away from the Guildhall, she is involved in many community projects and is chair of the Friends of Fort Royal Park and Worcester Dementia Action Alliance.
“I’m delighted to have been chosen by local Labour members here in Worcester to be the parliamentary candidate.
It’s a huge honour to stand for Labour to represent Worcester in parliament,” she said.
“Worcester has been hit extremely hard by this Tory government. Wages and living standards have fallen; there is a crisis in the NHS; police numbers have been slashed to the lowest levels since the 1970s and crime is rising.
“The stakes could not be higher and the hard work starts right now. I will be visiting every street, delivering Labour’s message of hope to every home in the constituency.
“Only Labour can build a fairer Britain that works for the many, not the few – and that starts right here in Worcester.”
