STAFF at the Crowngate Shopping Centre raised more than £300 for a children’s hospital charity and a local hospice by playing host to a day filled with fun for the whole family.
One Great Day, in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity and St Richard’s Hospice, saw centre staff team up with local gym, PF2, to complete the distance between the London-based hospital and the centre, using a treadmill, static bike and rowing machine.
It was one of 140 shopping centres across the UK taking part in One Great Day on Saturday, part of a series of family and community charity events being held throughout June to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, and other locally based children’s health charities.
Participating shopping centres provided a special event or family fun day for local communities across the UK to raise money for the great causes.
Operations manager Mike Lloyd, said: “Our fund-raising day has been a huge highlight in our events calendar so far this year and it’s been a really exciting, fun way to give something back for the wonderful work that charities do.
“The distance between Crowngate and Great Ormond Street Hospital is 125 miles, so we had committed to running, cycling and rowing that distance throughout the day. However, we had so much support that we managed to complete 188 miles, so we’re really proud of our achievements.”
Mayor Jabba Riaz also stopped by Crowngate to show his support for the fund-raising day.
“We also had a ‘Gosh Grabber’ for shoppers to enjoy. For a small donation, they could spend into the wind tunnel to catch confetti to be in with a chance of winning great prizes,” Mr Lloyd added.
“We would like to say a huge thank you to all shoppers, retail staff and PF2 gym for taking part in our One Great Day activities. We hope everyone had a fantastic day fund-raising with us.”
One Great Day was established in 2014 and has so far raised over £400,000 for 93 different children’s charities along with Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity.
One Great Day now covers over 50 million square feet of retail space across the United Kingdom, from Folkestone to Aberdeen and nearly everywhere in-between.
