World cup event is chance to get screened for prostate cancer

FORMER England World Cup footballers Steve Bull and Steve Hodge will be the special guests at a PSA testing event being co-hosted by Worcestershire Ambassadors and Worcestershire Advance in June.

The event, which will include full coverage of England’s opening World Cup group game against Tunisia with analysis from ex-Wolves striker Bull and former Nottingham Forest midfielder Hodge, will be held at Worcester Racecourse on Monday, June 18 at 5pm.

BBC presenter Dave Bradley, a survivor of prostate cancer, is the MC.

Under the leadership of Derek Fradgley, who died of cancer last year, Worcestershire Ambassadors have held an annual event at Sixways Stadium for the last ten years where men receive a PSA test for a donation to Worcestershire Prostate Cancer Awareness Group, who undertake the blood tests.

Over the last decade, 2,000 men have been tested and this year the Ambassadors are looking to test 1,000 men in the county in Mr Fradgley’s memory. Two events have already been held in Redditch and Worcester with 550 men tested.

Phil Dutton, chairman of Worcestershire Ambassadors, said: “As men are generally reluctant to request a test from their GP, we try to organise ours around a social event. The forthcoming World Cup offered the perfect opportunity as men can be tested then enjoy watching Gareth Southgate’s men kick off their campaign in Russia.

“We are encouraging employers in the county to send ten men for the test and are delighted to have had support from Essential Supply Products Ltd, Handelsbanken, Richards Sandy Partnership Ltd, Fisher German, Amros Promotions, BRI Wealth Management, SME Solicitors, Nicklin Accountants and Business Advisers and MFG Solicitors, which shows that they take their employees’ wellbeing seriously.”

Mr Dutton added the Ambassadors welcome the recent Government announcement to provide £75million of funding to support new research into early diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.

Tickets for the event cost £30, which includes a pie and chip supper and a PSA test. Groups and individuals are welcome.
