A DIRECTOR of cash-strapped Worcester City has called for club chiefs to hold an annual general meeting after the club’s accounts revealed City lost almost £290,000 in the last financial year.
Kevin Preece, who only joined the board at the start of the season, stood down yesterday six days after the club’s newly-published but unaudited accounts revealed a loss of £289,997 in year to April 2017, nearly double the amount of losses sustained between 2015 and 2016.
And in a statement to accompany the figures, fears were raised the Blue and White’s financial position could continue to worsen the longer the club are exiled from Worcester with City currently playing home games in Bromsgrove.
“There can therefore be no guarantee that attendances will continue at sustainable levels and therefore factors such as team performance and poor weather in the future may have a more detrimental effect on the number of people attending games than might be the case if they were played locally,” it read.
Mr Preece told fans he had set himself three objectives when he joined the board: positive dialogue with the Supporters Trust, to improve the commercial side of the club, and hold an AGM.
“I met with the Supporters Trust board in January, as I believe it’d be the best way for the club to progress through these testing times. The meeting was positive and I have relayed feedback to the club board – in particular of how the Trust board feel that the club needs to communicate with all supporters better,” he said.
“During the season I have taken the lead on the commercial arm of the club, in particular sponsorship, providing much needed income to club. I will continue to work on sponsorship alongside Jack Hundley and others in the future.”
“I believe the club is in urgent need of an AGM, to give clarity to shareholders of the situation the club finds itself in and its future direction, there has never been a more appropriate time than now. This however is down to the remaining board members to organise.
“I will be continuing my role as Football Secretary and will help Snapper and Lee between now and the end of the season in which we still have high hopes of winning this league.”
