Saluting Suffragettes movement

Worcester Editorial 15th Feb, 2018   0

AN EXHIBITION to mark 100 years since some women in the UK were given the right to vote has opened at The Hive.

Suffragettes, Voters and Worcester Woman will delve into the past, focusing on the female-driven movement and how Worcestershire women began to change their lives in the years that followed after the law was changed.

The display features pictures and written documents including old newspaper clippings and looks at some of the Worcestershire women who campaigned for the vote including Clarence Houseman, Elsie Howie, Isabel Margesson and Florence Peek. It explores how women have used their vote in the years that followed.

The exhibition runs at The Hive until next Friday.

Coun Lucy Hodgson, cabinet member for Communities, said: “It is so important we recognise and remember those dedicated individuals who tirelessly campaigned for women to be granted the right to vote.

“This exhibition focuses on the Worcestershire women who were part of the Suffragettes movement and I’d encourage visitors to The Hive to go and take a look to understand further how this group shaped the future of this country.”

The People Act 1918 gave women over 30 who met certain property qualifications and all men over 21 the right to vote.
