STUDENT paramedics from the University of Worcester were welcomed into two city care homes as part of a series of work experience placements.
Sanctuary Care’s Regent Residential Care Home and Juniper House Residential Care Home, both in St John’s, opened their doors to the first year students for the chance to get ‘real life’ experience.
The five-week placements aim to help the students develop their communication skills by giving them the experience of life in a care home.
Two of the students at Regent Residential Care Home on School Road, 18-year-old’s Siobhan Kirk and Matthew Lloyd helped with with mealtimes activities and shadowed the senior care assistants to learn about residents’ medical needs.
Siobhan said: “Everyone has made me feel very welcome and all the staff have given me guidance and support.
“The residents are really friendly and it’s been good to build a rapport with them. I really feel part of the team.”
Matthew added: “The residents are all so lovely and the home is really well run. It’s great to be a friendly face, talking to the residents and getting to know them.”
Neil Quinn, Sanctuary Care’s human resources director, said: “We’re really proud to be supporting the University of Worcester by welcoming these aspiring paramedics into our homes.
“The feedback from our teams has been very positive and our residents have really enjoyed spending time with them.
“Intergenerational projects are so important to give people a mutual respect for different generations and this partnership is also proving to be a beneficial experience for our staff and residents.”
