Mayor taking to the skies in a bid to net charity cash

Worcester Editorial 11th Nov, 2017   0

THE MAYOR of Worcester will be swapping his chains of office for a parachute when he takes to the skies for a charity skydive.

Coun Steve Mackay will be joining army paratroopers to jump out of a plane at 12,000ft in the air in the hope of raising £500 for three of his chosen charities,

Headway Worcestershire, Victim Support and Onside Advocacy.

The daredevil Mayor is calling on city residents to sign up to sponsor him to ensure his funding target isn’t just pie in the sky.

“I do have a few butterflies, but it’s a personal challenge and a great way of raising funds for what I think are three really important charities and I hope Worcester people will support me,” Coun Mackay said.

The Mayor will be channelling his inner Biggles and hitting the heights on March 7 next year when he joins the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers for parachute training in Wiltshire.

“I’ll be jumping with trained paratroopers, so they’re obviously used to throwing themselves out of planes at 12,000ft,” he said.

“It’s a slightly daunting experience for me, but I’ll be doing a tandem jump with an experience paratrooper strapped to my back, so I’m sure everything will go well.

“I’ll only actually be given any training on the morning of the jump. How am I preparing in the meantime? I’m trying not to think about it!

“I have personal connections with all these charities and I know they provide important support for many vulnerable people who are not in a good place and often can’t always speak up for themselves.

“Please dig deep to support my sky dive. You can sign up to support me by going to uk.virginmoneygiving.com and searching for Steve Mackay.”
