STUDENTS from Worcestershire’s Adult Learning Education Classes (ALEC) are celebrating completing their first year.
The class of eight have been attending lessons at Perdiswell Young People’s Leisure Club, which helps those with learning difficulties, special educational needs and mental health issues.
The creators of ALEC, Sharon Wilkins and Linda Walker, said they set the project up to deliver freedom of choice and to extend horizons to disabled people so they could make their own decisions, based on their lifestyles.
Sharon said: “We are delighted our students have gained such valuable skills through our learning approach.
“Traditionally, pupils with special needs cover topics such as gardening and arts and crafts, whereas we offer a much broader curriculum, including maths, English and current affairs.
“Such knowledge equips our students with valuable awareness and information.”
In Sharon’s previous work, she was the eduction manager at Worcestershire Lifestyles where she gained valuable experience working with tutors, students and external education providers.
She added: “We are offering a completely new educational experience, specifically focusing on core strengths and attributes where education, freedom of choice, relevant and practical courses combined with dedicated professional teaching staff deliver a fantastic community service to disabled people.
“The Government cuts will continue until 2020 and organisations such as ours will be continually affected.
“Our aim is therefore to focus on self-sufficiency, providing educational support to those who need it for as long as they need it.”
The classes, which run from 10am until 3pm once a week, are now available from September onwards and cost £40 per student.
