COUN Matthew Jenkins insisted he will press Worcestershire County Council on tackling issues by doing things that ‘make sense’ after retaining his seat for the Green Party.
The St Stephen ward saw coun Jenkins claim 1,514 votes – 659 more votes than runner-up Alan Feeney for the Conservatives.
And having secured more than 50 per cent of the votes in the ward, coun Jenkins believes being an active member of the St Stephen community has made the difference.
“I’m very pleased. There’s been a lot of work from everyone involved, knocking on doors and talking to people,” said coun Jenkins.
“Increasing my majority shows people in St Stephen like what I’ve been doing, but I think there’s still a lot to do. There’s some very big issues in the Arboretum like parking and there’s safety issues on Bilford Road.
“Hopefully I can work with the council, which is now even more Conservative, in persuading them to do a few more green things and things that actually make more sense.
“I think the reason for being elected this time round has less to do with national politics and more to do with what we’re doing locally. It’s the doorstep type stuff and being an active member of the community. Even if it’s doing the small things.
“It makes a big difference and I’m sure lots of people will vote differently in the General Election, but this is more about local issues,” he added.
