THE UNIVERSITY of Worcester Arena has been voted the best venue in the British Basketball League (BBL) by fans across the UK.
The multi-purpose 2,000 seater sports arena recently came out on top in a BBL vote for the UK’s best venue, beating competition from a number of prestigious sports facilities including Glasgow’s Emirates Arena, Birmingham’s Barclaycard Arena and London’s The O2.
The golden-clad building, which is home to the Worcester Wolves basketball team and the Severn Stars netball side, is the first and currently only venue purpose-designed to meet the needs of wheelchair athletes and was the training base of British Wheelchair Basketball in the run up to their most successful Paralympic Games ever.
Mick Donovan, the University of Worcester’s deputy pro vice chancellor, said: “The University of Worcester Arena was created with a clear focus on inclusive sport.
“Clearly basketball forms a significant part of what we provide at the arena and we’re delighted that British basketball fans have recognised it as a venue they enjoy coming to above all others, reflecting the great atmosphere we create on match day.”
Andy Webb, BBL chief operating officer, said: “Although pitted against other excellent BBL venues across the country, the University of Worcester Arena’s facilities and atmosphere clearly stood out to the public.
“They must also suit the Worcester Wolves too, who are unbeaten at the arena in eight games and have not lost there since the beginning of the year.”
