Musical theatre raises cash for guide dogs

Worcester Editorial 18th Mar, 2017   0

KIND-HEARTED members of the Worcester Musical Theatre Company raised almost £4,000 from their recent show which enabled them to name a new guide dog.

An estimated 2,000 packed into the Swan Theatre during the run of ‘Walking on Sunshine’ which saw 45 onstage singers and dancers joined at various times by 60 children from Claines and Wilden CE Primary Schools and 24 dancers from the Harlequin Stage School.

The undoubted stars though were the eight golden retrievers from Guide Dogs who stole the show during the curtain calls.

Money raised by the caring cast and audiences for their chosen charity saw them name black labrador ‘Sunny’.

Cast members have already cast their eyes to their next show ‘Razzle Dazzle’ which was unveiled at a ‘Meet the Show’ night on Monday (March 13).

The company’s chosen charity for the year is the Motor Neurone Disease Association which is close to the heart of several members of the cast whose lives have been touched by the disease.

Almost 25 per cent of the tickets for the new show have already been reserved and producer Val Knight said work began the day after the curtain came down on ‘Walking on Sunshine’.

“We have designed the show and all of the music recorded, a song from each of the eight sections was sung on Monday and some of the choreography was practised.

“Auditions are on April 3 and rehearsals begin on April 24,” she added.

Razzle Dazzle will be held at the Swan Theatre from Tuesday, October 31 to Saturday, November 4 with a matinee performance on the final day.

Tickets at £14 (opening night £12) are available from Gill Saunders on 01905 354063 until July 31 and thereafter from Worcester Live on 01905 611427.
