Commonwealth flag is flown

THE COMMONWEALTH flag was flown above the Guildhall as Worcsester celebrated Commonwealth Day in style.

A host of local dignitaries joined city Mayor Coun Paul Denham on Monday (March 13) to celebrate the unique scheme, now in its third year.

The day is a celebration of the values the Commonwealth upholds and the opportunities offered for friendship and co-operation with fellow Commonwealth citizens around the world.

Coun Denham read out the Commonwealth Affirmation and a special message from Right Hon. Patricia Scotland QC, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations, before the flag was raised.

“I am delighted to have the honour of reading the affirmation on the steps of our Guildhall and I believe that it is right and good that we should continue to celebrate our friendship with our Commonwealth cousins,” said Coun Denham.

Worcester was one of 730 locations in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and other Commonwealth countries to fly the flag.
