Costly upgrade for machines ahead of new £1 introduction

MACHINES at car parks in Worcester have been adapted ready for the introduction of the new 12-sided one pound coin.

Worcester City Council has spent £14,500 preparing the machines in all 14 of the council owned car parks and the machines will accept current and new £1 coins from Tuesday, March 28.

As well as paying for parking by cash, drivers also have the option to pay for their parking and extend their stay using their mobile phone and a credit or debit card.

Cashless parking service RingGo is offered as an alternative to coin payments in all of Worcester City Council’s off street car parks.

Coun Geoff Williams, Cabinet Member for Economic Prosperity at Worcester City Council, said: “Our officers have been preparing behind the scenes for several months, and everything is now in place for customers to use the new one pound coin right from the first day of introduction in our car parks.”
