YOUNGSTERS from a Worcester school have teamed up with their local care home to support a national wildlife conservation project.
Children from St Clement’s CE Primary School recently visited Sanctuary Care’s Regent Residential Care Home in St John’s, where they painted bird boxes to celebrate National Nest Box Week.
Pupils aged eight and nine joined the School Road home’s residents in getting creative to paint the bird boxes and feeders, which were then placed around the care home’s and school’s grounds.
National Nest Box Week, which ran from February 14 to February 21 encouraged local communities to display nest boxes in order to promote and enhance biodiversity and conservation of breeding birds and wildlife.
Mary Caligari, a 91-year-old resident at the home, said: “I really enjoyed meeting all the children. They were so lovely and such great painters for our bird boxes.”
Averil Thomas, a teacher at St Clement’s CE Primary School, said: “The students had a fabulous time. They really enjoyed creating the bird boxes and were genuinely thrilled to see how much the residents loved them and how much joy they will bring to the home.
“We heard how much everyone loves watching the birds come and go in the garden.
“I’m really proud of the group of students as they’ve done a fantastic job and have done something really heart-warming for their community.”
Bridie Gray, the home’s activities leader, said: “We always enjoy the visits from St Clement’s as they bring nothing but joy to the home.
“They created beautiful nest boxes for the garden and we’ll really enjoy them throughout the year. We get wonderful wildlife in our grounds so it’s wonderful to support the local birds.”
