Being aware of the silent killer

Worcester Editorial 16th Feb, 2017   0

UNIVERSITY students in Worcester are being urged to take part in a competition to find creative ways of highlighting the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Project SHOUT has launched its own University Challenge to raise awareness of carbon monoxide poisoning, known as the silent killer, which takes the lives of about 50 people in the UK every year due to leaks from boilers, cookers and fires.

The competition is looking for students to creatively depict the dangers of carbon monoxide and how they can protect themselves with a CO alarm. As part of the competition, there are three categories for students to enter, including film and animation. photography and art and graphic design.

Students who enter will have the chance to win £1,500 and all shortlisted finalists will be invited to the awards ceremony which will be held at an exclusive venue in London in September.

Project SHOUT Campaign Director, Rob Lyon, said: “Project SHOUT University Challenge was a huge success in 2016 and we are hoping to reach out to more students this year to help us shout even louder about the dangers of CO.

“Learning about the dangers of carbon monoxide is crucial, especially amongst families, as young children can be more vulnerable to the effects of CO, including students who are often living away from home for the first time.

“A common mistake that is made is that people often misdiagnose the symptoms of CO poisoning as flu or food poisoning, therefore it is essential people are aware of the dangers that could affect them.”
