An issue worth examining

Worcester Editorial 14th Feb, 2017   0

A JOURNALISM graduate from the University of Worcester has launched his own magazine less than two years after completing his degree.

Based on a final year University project, entrepreneur Conor Rees recently founded ‘99 Percent Lifestyle’, which focuses on design, creativity, business and travel.

Having initially started by uploading material to a website he had created during his studies, Conor built up followers on social media and then submitted the magazine to the Midlands Media Student Awards.

He won the ‘Student of the Year Award’ and ‘Online Innovation and Blogger/Vlogger Award’, which encouraged him to start his own magazine business.

The magazine, which is currently sold via Conor’s website to two retailers in Birmingham and one in London, features interviews with businesses and influencers from around the world.

Although initial funding came from The Princes’ Trust, Conor currently handles the magazine, website, social media, design, advertising and sales himself, but does hope to bring other people on board.

Conor said: “It’s gave me various skills and knowledge on topics such as social media and structuring news stories and features. I would recommend any graduate to try something they’re thinking about. I think it’s probably the best time to take a risk.

“My target audience is people who have a passion for creativity, such as entrepreneurs and those who have a passion for travel. The main idea of each piece of content is that it could inspire someone.

“It does take up a lot of energy, but I enjoy working on it knowing that I’ve created and built up something from scratch.”
