Council’s shining example for Dementia UK

Worcester Editorial 29th Nov, 2016   0

WORCESTER City Council has handed over a cheque for more than £4,000 to Dementia UK.

The donation is a surplus from the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management’s metals recycling scheme, which the City Council’s crematorium is part of.

The recycling of metals resulting from cremation is only carried out with the written consent of each bereaved family.

Following a cremation, the remains contain metals from the coffin and from orthopaedic implants such as hip and knee replacement joints.

So far Worcester City Council has donated more than £30,000 to various charities through the scheme.

Hilda Hayo, Chief Executive of Dementia UK, said: “We are extremely grateful for this donation which will help us to provide more support to local families.

“For example £4,000 could help cover the cost of a visit from one of our Admiral Nurses to support 133 families living with dementia.”
