BUDDING journalists at the University of Worcester welcomed the BBC’s head of regional news coverage on a tour of their TV studios.

David Holdsworth, BBC English regions controller, recently visited the University’s St John’s Campus, where he gave students an insight into some of the challenges facing the media organisation and helped to prepare them for an essay on the topic.

Mr Holdsworth said: “We had a really interesting discussion about the future of the BBC and students pushed hard on the long term challenges the BBC faces as a public service broadcaster.

“They were particularly interested in the way the BBC might evolve to suit younger audiences.

“I think the facilities at the University are really impressive and I’m sure many broadcasters would be proud of them. The more we can give students the real life pressures of broadcasting, the better the students and industry will be in the long run.”

Dan Johnson, a journalism lecturer at the University, said: “The mission of the BBC is to inform, educate and entertain and David definitely achieved all three during a lively discussion with our students, who were really engaged throughout.”

Max Banner, a third year journalism student, said: “It was great to have David Holdsworth come into our lecture to talk about the BBC and where its future may be heading. Having the opportunity to talk to somebody of his standing within the BBC is invaluable.”
