A CARING grandmother has raised more than £1,000 for charity after she sold hundreds of knitted poppies at a Worcester supermarket.
Beatrice Furlong, along with her family and friends, spent all year knitting the 650 poppies to sell at Asda for £2, with the proceeds going to the Royal British Legion.
The 98-year-old’s late husband, Vincent, fought in the Second World War, and her grandson Nicholas also served in the Armed Forces and was involved in the Gulf War.
Beatrice, who’s been doing tireless work for the local community for decades, said: “People have been coming up to us to say well done and buy poppies. It’s been lovely. As a family we’ve seen a lot of distress due to wars and we mustn’t forget.”
Her daughter Mal buys the red, green and black wool for the poppies and helps Beatrice sew them together.
Mal said “Making the poppies keeps my mum occupied, her mind alert and her hands supple. She’s been knitting poppies for three years. The first year she raised £400, last year we raised £600 and this year we’re hoping to get more than £1,000.”
The Royal British Legion charity provides lifelong support for people in the Armed Forces, veterans and their families.
Worcester store’s Community Champion John Horsley, who was on hand to help Beatrice and Mal, said: “Beatrice and Mal are just unbelievable, they work non-stop for the community.”
