SPORTING legends and stars of the future have been recognised at the annual Freedom Leisure Worcester Sports Awards.

Presented by Olympian and TV athletics commentator Steve Cram CBE at the University of Worcester Arena, the awards celebrated and honoured the city’s top athletes across sixteen categories.

The event, which was held in partnership with Sport Worcester and supported by Worcester City Council, saw RGS’ under-11s girls hockey team scoop the ‘Best Educational Sporting Achievement Award’, for being crowned 2016 England Hockey Worcestershire under-11 and England Hockey Midlands under-11 champions.

Worcester Swimming Club took home the ‘Club of the Year Award’ after seeing nine swimmers qualify for the end of year National Championships and the ‘Howard Peters Award for Outstanding Contribution’ went to David Walker, who has reached the 60 year milestone with Worcester Athletics Club.

Mark Stowe won the ‘Coach of the Year Award’ for training Rio 2016 Paralympics silver medallist Rebecca Redfern at this summer’s Games and Harrison Keasey scooped the ‘Disability Sports Person of the Year Award’, for his outstanding commitment in rowing, air rifle shooting, sailing, judo, running and swimming.

Ivan Horsfall-Turner, managing director of Freedom Leisure, said: “It was yet again a great night, with headline sponsor Heart of Worcestershire College ensuring it was a glittering affair.

“We’re here to serve the community by aiding fitness and leisure, so these awards are very important to us. This year we were honoured to have Olympic legend Steve Cram with us for the event and we thank him for his support.”

All the winners have been entered in the regional heats, with the ultimate goal of reaching the national BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards in December.
