Council chief gets hands dirty

WORCESTER City Council leader Coun Adrian Gregson joined residents in tidying streets and alleyways to find out what it takes to keep Worcester clean and green.

The Labour helped spruce up the city’s Ronkswood area and experienced first hand the daily work of the council’s Cleaner and Greener team.

The service is responsible for keeping the streets clean, maintaining Worcester’s award-winning parks, emptying household bins and much more.

Their work includes emptying 44,000 green and black bins and another 5,497 garden waste bins at residents’ homes, along with 615 business customers’ bins, 624 litter bins and another 257 dog waste bins on the city’s streets, plus cleaning the city centre’s streets 364 days of the year.

Coun Gregson said: “The Neighbourhood Team, like the whole of our Cleaner and Greener service, are committed to looking after our great city, keeping it clean and tidy for the good of all our communities.

“The flexibility and adaptability they show in their vital work is something the whole city relies on and, I hope, appreciates. From my perspective, they are the council’s ambassadors, showing the commitment we have to serving local people.”

The Council’s Labour cabinet recently voted to cancel plans the previous Conservative leadership had introduced to outsource the service which had been expected to deliver financial savings.

Coun Gregson said: “Our Labour leadership is committed to balancing the budget for the whole council. We won’t do this by getting rid of services. We’ll do it by finding smart savings, delivering improvements and making investments that will bring us a return to help us further improve our finances.

“All of these steps will ensure we can continue to deliver essential services, from cleaning Worcester’s streets to giving grants to local businesses.”
