New service aims to offer stroke support

Worcester Editorial 14th Aug, 2016 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

COUNTY council chiefs and the Stroke Association have launched a new support service for people who have suffered strokes, their families and carers.

The service will provide information, emotional support and practical advice to stroke survivors and those who care for them to help them make the best possible recovery and live their life to the full following a stroke.

All stroke survivors will receive a comprehensive, holistic assessment to identify both their needs and the needs of their family or carer. The service will then work with the survivor to develop a recovery plan with clear and realistic goals, whilst also pointing them in the direction of other services if they are needed.

It is believed some 1,100 people will have a new stroke each year in Worcestershire and of these, about 870 people might expect to leave hospital with a disability of some sort, ranging from mild to very severe.

Sarah Adderley, deputy head of operations at the Stroke Association, said: “We believe in life after stroke and this service gives us the opportunity to work with stroke survivors and their families, providing invaluable specialist support in the community.

“We are really looking forward to working with Worcestershire Integrated Carers Hub and other organisations, finding innovative ways to provide the essential support that people need to make the best recovery.”

Coun Sheila Blagg, Cabinet Member with responsibility for adult social care, said: “The holistic assessments and recovery plans will ensure a person receives the physical care they need, and the communication and other emotional support aspects of the service will help them to remain engaged and connected with their community and their loved ones.”
