Step back in time to the Battle of Worcester at The Commandery

Worcester Editorial 6th Aug, 2016 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

VISITORS at The Commandery will have the chance to step back in time and experience life as a civilian during the Battle of Worcester.

Over the bank holiday weekend from Saturday (August 27) to Monday (August 29) a variety of activities and demonstrations will be held including musket firing, a special picnic spot in the gardens and cakes and lunches in the canal-side cafe.

Characters from 1651 will divulge their stories of Worcester as it prepared for the final battle of the English Civil War with civilians, from vicar to surgeon, sharing their special skill with those who encounter them.

In the grounds of The Commandery, a living history encampment will reveal many aspects of civilian life, including 17th Century cooking and traditional children’s games.

In the run-up to the event, a series of ‘Fighting, Food & Fashion’ workshops will encourage families to become English Civil War experts, from learning to forage for pottage stew, to joining the English Civil War training camp.

Sarah Bourne, Commandery Events Organiser, said: “We want to give our visitors a real sense of life at the end of August 1651 by introducing them to the fascinating variety of people who were involved and giving them an exceptionally fun day out this bank holiday weekend.”

The Battle of Worcester Weekend ‘A Civilian’s Story’ will be held at The Commandery from Saturday (August 27) to Monday (August 29) at 10am to 5pm (Sat and Mon) and from 1.30pm to 5pm (Sun).

Entry to The Commandery and the special event is free to all card holders and Worcester City residents on production of a Worcester City Council tax bill. Otherwise entry is £5.50 for adults, £2.50 for children and a family ticket costs just £13.
