GREEN-FINGERED pupils at a special needs school in Worcester had the chance to learn gardening skills when they planted sunflowers in the school garden.
Thanks to a £1,000 donation from Sanctuary Group, pupils at Fort Royal Community School, on Wylds Lane, worked together to transform a piece of green space at the school into a sunflower garden.
The money was used to buy spades, rakes and shovels, as well as moveable fence panels, which will allow the school to expand or change the shape of the garden.
As part of their outdoor learning classes, children at the school were able to play a part in the whole process of growing the sunflowers, from the digging and planting of the seeds to the watering and maintaining of them.
Margaret Jones, the school’s grant administrator, said: “We pride ourselves on offering a wide range of opportunities to our children.
“Outdoor learning is a key element in this and the contribution from Sanctuary Group has enabled us to improve the learning opportunities we can provide. The sunflower garden has given everyone a real lift, it looks so pretty and all the children in school have benefited enormously, you walk past and can’t help but smile!”
Cath Jordan, Sanctuary’s national project manager, added: “The work that Fort Royal Community School does and the support the staff give the children is really something special.
“We’re always looking for community projects to support that will benefit residents in the areas we’re building new homes and we were delighted to be able to work with this fantastic school.”
