Worcester men and boys show a united 'front' at charity run

MEN and boys from all around Worcester and the local area came together to show their support for men with prostate cancer for the Go Dad Run event.

Former world champion athletes Colin Jackson and Derek Redmond set them off on a 5k and 10k run around Worcester Racecourse for the first Sanlam Go Dad Run of 2016.

The 5k was won by Rob Bowery with Matthew Davis in second place, just ahead of 14-year-old James Dale.

And the first three home in the 10k were Neil Laurenson, Paul Matthews and Adam Goren.

The runners all pulled on a pair of blue Go Dad Run Y fronts over their shorts as they ran around the course on Saturday (June 10) in front of an enthusiastic crowd, and many of them were also raising sponsorship money for the charity Prostate Cancer UK.

Colin created Go Dad Run four years ago when two of his uncles developed prostate cancer and only one survived and he was delighted at the response from the men of Worcester.

“We are all here to raise awareness about men’s health issues and funds for Prostate Cancer UK and it’s been a great morning,” he said.

“I love this mass participation feel with the shared experience that it especially gives to dads and sons and the way that helps to get everyone thinking and talking about their fitness and well-being.

“The figures are shocking as one in eight men in the UK will suffer from prostate cancer and it is really important that guys in the at-risk groups, or over the age of 45, make sure they have regular PSA blood tests with their GP.

“Because, as so many of the men we work with have told us, there are often no advance symptoms,” he added.

With the day lacking in summer sun the runners were warmed up by a team from the local Nuffield Gym, and their Duty Manager, Jenny McCarthy was delighted to be involved with Colin and Go Dad Run.

The remaining Go Dad Runs take place in Sunderland, Bristol, London, Cardiff and the Isle of Man throughout June.
