A WORCESTER family have teamed up with a leisure service to donate exercise equipment to children with cystic fibrosis.
The family of youngster Jess Warner-Andrews, who suffers from the lung condition affecting the respiratory and digestive systems, and staff at Wychavon Leisure, recently donated hula hoops, balls, hockey sticks and gym equipment to the cystic fibrosis service at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
Jess’s family raised £500 for the service to get the sports equipment to benefit cystic fibrosis patients, who need to regularly exercise to reduce the risk of infections.
The service, which began in June last year, provides treatment for children with the condition who previously had to travel to Birmingham for care.
Wychavon Leisure, which runs centres in Pershore, Evesham, Droitwich Spa and Bromsgrove, has also begun offering concessionary rates for cystic fibrosis patients and their families, recognising the vital need for children with the condition to exercise.
Jo Colley, cystic fibrosis physiotherapist at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “The children have loved the variety of different sports equipment and it has made in-patient stays much more interesting. The equipment has also motivated the children during physiotherapy sessions.”
