A KIND-HEARTED 91-year-old Worcester woman from has retired from volunteering after more than two decades at a mother and baby clinic.

Helena Connelly began volunteering at the Henwick Halt Medial Practice in St Johns 25 years ago but weighed her last baby on Friday, September 11.

A celebratory tea party was held in her honour where she received a long service certificate for her outstanding and unprecedented contribution to the Health Visiting service in Worcester.

The modest 91-year-old downplayed her role and contribution during her time at the maternity clinic, but grateful colleagues, family and friends gave her a send off she deserved.

“They needed have done that,” she said.

After her many years at the clinic, Mrs Connelly began weighing the babies of the mothers who she had weighed when she first started volunteering.

“I just wanted to do something voluntary and something interesting. I’m just there to help, I get the toys out on a Friday morning for the babies to play with and then put them all away again once the clinic is finished.”

Patricia Haywood, who worked with Mrs Connelly, said: “All those involved with the clinic are extremely grateful to Helena for all her hard work, the time and care she has given over those years and wish her a healthy retirement.”
