Man who threw mobile phone at girlfriend gets suspended term

A MAN who threw a mobile phone at his girlfriend leaving her with a black eye has been given a three-month suspended jail term.

Adam Griffin, of Blackpole Road, pleaded guilty at Worcester Magistrates Court last Friday (February 13) to causing actual bodily harm to his girlfriend of six years which led to her eye closing up and requiring a stitch.

Prosecutor, Adrian Jones, said the defendant had borrowed his partner’s phone and saw a number on it he did not like and when she asked for her phone back he threw it at her.

He added: “When he saw what he had done he got frozen peas to put on her eye.

“He said we need to go to the hospital but we can’t tell them the truth because he will get arrested.”

They went back to Griffin’s home where he asked his partner to remove social network applications from her phone. She told him she was going to the shop but instead went to the police.

Defence solicitor, Paul Stanley, said the defendant threw the phone underarm through a partially closed door and claimed he had not seen where she was.

District Judge French said Griffin, who had a previous conviction for harming the same woman, had shown little remorse.

“Having had the experience of being brought before the court, after that you assault her again. A custodial sentence would be merited,” he said.

“It seems to me that you don’t entirely accept your behaviour or show remorse for this and think she’s brought the matter on herself. I hope you are not under any illusions now.”

Griffin, whose sentence was suspended for 12 months, was also handed a £300 fine, ordered to pay the victim £145 and £80 in court costs.
