Robert plays his part in improving area

PLAYTIME is back on the agenda for toddlers in a village on the outskirts of Worcester thanks to the efforts of a plucky eight-year-old boy.

The popular spot at Leigh Hurst in Bransford has had a £6,000 revamp after Robert Foskett campaigned even he struggled to use some of the equipment, let alone children at pre-school age.

Robert, who lives in Leigh Sinton read the sign at the park entrance which said to contact Leigh and Bransford Parish Council to report any problems, and did just that.

The King’s St Alban’s in Worcester school pupil, did some research into playgrounds and was then invited to give a presentation to the parish councillors.

But despite the seemingly daunting task he said he did not feel nervous and the council soon formed their own committee to look into the matter further after being impressed with Robert’s ideas.

Now after months of effort the first part of the new equipment is in place but the council is hoping to refurbish the whole park.

The play bark at the site has also been replaced after Robert pointed out some chunks were too sharp and could result in an injury.

He said: “There wasn’t anything for little children or children my age before. I can’t even reach some of the bars even if I jump. It’s useless.

“Now it is perfect. I am proud of what I have been able to do and I am glad I have been listened too.

“I think it is a good idea for children to get involved in their community and more children should do it.”

District councillors put about £500 in to the project while county councillor Paul Tuthill provided £1,500 from his discretionary fund.

Sarah Rouse, who led the parish council’s efforts on the work, added: “It was a joy to see someone so young wanting to make a positive contribution to his community. I was delighted I could help him and I hope it encourages more people to get in touch with their parish councils.”
