A PAIR of selfless rowers who saved an elderly woman from drowning in Worcester have been nominated for a national bravery award.
Matthew Richardson, from St Helens, and Luke O’Grady, of Southport, have been put forward for the Royal Humane Society Commendation Certificate after they committed the heroic act while camping at the 5th Worcester Sea Scouts Hut on Parkview Terrace on Saturday (November 8).
Matthew, 26, and Luke, 15, both members of the British Dragon Racing Boat association, were rowing their dragon boat when they found the victim who had fallen in the river.
The woman, who was in her 70s and from the Forest of Dean, was walking along the riverbank near the Northwick Slip when she lost her footing and fell in, before the current swept her hundreds of metres down stream.
Instructor Matthew, assisted by Luke, then pulled her out of the water. The woman was close to hypothermia so was taken to hospital. She is now home with her family.
The pair were nominated for the award by West Mercia Police.
Sgt Pete Frankish said: “Matthew and Luke undoubtedly saved the woman’s life. Had they not been there or if she had been in the water any longer, it could have led to a tragic end.
“They committed a truly heroic act and we would like to commend them for this, so we have nominated them for the Royal Humane Society Awards.
“These medals, testimonials and certificates are awarded throughout the year, for outstanding acts of bravery.”
