DRIVERS will be able to continue to take advantage of reduced parking prices in the city centre after after Worcester City Council agreed to make its temporary offer permanent.
A 30-minute option where parking costs 40p will remain in place along with a £1 flat rate between 7pm and 9pm with a £5 charge for coaches and lorries.
The prices, which were agreed at a meeting last Tuesday (September 30), were originally part of a three-month trial launched by the city council during the summer.
The Tory leadership decided to make the changes after the previous Labour-led council controversially opted to increase car parking prices.
And speaking after the meeting, Coun Marc Bayliss, cabinet member for economic prosperity, said the move was important to help attract people to the city centre.
“Lower parking prices are great news for Worcester, and are vital to ensuring our city enjoys a healthy retail and tourism economy,” he said.
“This important measure will also reduce the congestion in side streets, as people find it more appealing to use our car parks again.”
Here is a list of the changes:
– A 30-minute rate costing just 40p in Amber zone car parks and 60p in the Red zone
– A £1 charge from 7pm to 9pm in Amber zone and Red zone car parks
– Cut price charges in Red zone car parks – down from £6 to £5 for four hours, £10 to £7.50 for six hours and from £15 to £10 for 24 hours
– Croft Road car parking charges is re-classified as a Green zone car park, from its current Amber status. One hour will now be 30p cheaper at 60p and 24 hours will go down from £6 to £3.50
– A £5 charge for coaches at Croft Road – down from £10 – and a cut in charges for lorries from £25 to £5.
– 24-hour parking will continue to be available in St Martin’s Gate for just £3.60.
Red zone car parks: Copenhagen Street, Cornmarket, Providence Street
Amber zone car parks: St Martin’s Gate, Cattle Market, King Street, Newport Street, Clare Street, Commandery Road, Croft Road
Green Zone car parks: Pitchcroft, Tallow Hill, Tybridge Street
