FOUR wards at Worcestershire Royal Hospital have been closed to visitors due to an outbreak of Norovirus.
Avon 4, AMU, Severn HDU and Severn Vascular Ward are all shut to the public, except in compassionate cases.
Hospital bosses have said enhanced cleaning is being carried out to contain the virus.
Anyone who feels their visit is essential should restrict it to immediate family members only and a maximum of two visitors per patient at any one time.
Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust has also asked nobody under the age of 16 visits to prevent the bug spreading from schools, nurseries and playgroups.
Visitors are also being reminded it is extremely important to wash their hands regularly and use the alcohol hand gel provided.
David Shakespeare, associate chief nurse for infection control, said limiting the number of people coming into hospital wards significantly reduced the risk of the spread of Norovirus and helped keep the hospital running efficiently.
“We would ask anyone with any symptoms of Norovirus infection such as diarrhoea and/or vomiting to stay at home and not come to the hospital until they have been symptom free for at least 48 hours,” he added.
“For advice please telephone your GP or NHS 111 rather than risk transmitting the infection further.”
There is no specific treatment for Norovirus apart from letting the illness run its course. Whilst it is highly infectious and there are still some simple infection control procedures to follow:
· Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration
· Wash hands thoroughly after using the toilet
· Food preparation for others should be avoided until 48 hours after symptoms have subsided
· Do not share towels and flannels
· Disinfect surfaces
Anyone who is unsure should contact the ward directly for advice.
Residents should telephone their GP or NHS 111 for advice if the symptoms do not quickly subside or there are additional concerns.
