GREEN-fingered pupils are looking to get their knees dirty after their school’s garden was officially opened.
Tony Blake, owner of St Peter’s Garden Centre, attended Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College last Wednesday (July 16) to open the Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN) Growing Garden.
It comes after Year Ten and 11 students embarked on a project to grow and maintain their own vegetable and salad garden. It has seen them learn how to design a vegetable plot, work out a gardening calender and find out about healthy eating.
Student Owen Smith said: “I’ve learned a lot about what soil to use and where to plant the vegetables and salad we are growing.
“It is good to do it now and it will help me in the future when I want to plant my own vegetables.”
Muriel Fitzer, special needs education co-ordinator, added: “We have been very fortunate to have been sponsored and supported by St Peter’s Garden Centre.
“We would like to officially thank Tony Blake, the owner for the kind donations to allow us to enable to start the project.”
