Donation to keep youngsters active

YOUNGSTERS are set to remain active this summer thanks to a generous donation from a Worcester City councillor.

Coun Richard Udall, councillor for St John’s, has used £1,000 from his divisional fund to back a two-week summer scheme at the YMCA in Henwick Road.

The programme takes place in the middle two-weeks of August and will provide summer activities for children aged seven to 14, from 11am to 2pm.

Table tennis, arts and crafts, soft ball games, football, cricket, tag rugby, rugby tennis, Danish longball, dodgeball, badminton, rounders, running, tug of war and even water pistol fights will all be on offer.

The scheme came about when St John’s residents complained to Coun Udall about primary school children having nowhere to play, which led him to negotiate the idea with the YMCA.

“St John’s does not have many public grassed spaces where children can play safely,” he said. “This will ensure a safe environment with supervised play facilities for local children from across St John’s.

“British summer time cannot rely on the weather, the YMCA has excellent indoor facilities which will be available to children as part of the scheme, so whatever the weather may bring in August the needs of local children will be answered by the YMCA.

“The fun and games to be provided are excellent and will go down very well, I’m pleased it will include a sports day and I am sure the water pistol fights will be very popular.

“On behalf of parents and residents of St John’s I would like to thank the YMCA for agreeing to support such a scheme.”
