Crime spree brings community order

AN ALCOHOLIC who went on a stealing spree in the city has been handed a community order.

Darren Nixon, of St Paul’s Hostel on Tallow Hill, entered B&M Stores in St Martins Quarter at 3.40pm on May 13 and put £13.36 worth of cider and beer in his bag in order to ‘top up’.

Less than ten minutes later the 34-year-old went into Asda where CCTV captured him taking clothing, valued at £61, towards the toilets and returned with them in his rucksack, Worcester Magistrates Court heard on Friday, June 13.

Nixon, who had to leave the YMCA after they found alcohol in his room, was detained outside the store and taken back inside where his bag was searched and all items were recovered.

On May 19, he stole a further £31.06 of items from the Co-op in Worcester, about 4.15pm, but was again detained outside where all the property was recovered.

David Olivere, defending solicitor, said: “He’s usually a man of good character.

“Becoming involved in the justice system has helped him already, it’s given him a slap in the face and made him think about making the right choices.

“He’s still drinking at the present time but it’s reduced dramatically. It’s a sad case and a man that’s in need of some assistance.”

Nixon was given a nine-month community order with nine months of supervision.

He was also ordered to pay court costs of £85, a £60 victim surcharge and was fined £10.
