PLANS to create a Sainsbury’s store in Barbourne have been submitted to the city council.
As we revealed last month, the supermarket giant wants to turn the In-Toto furniture store on Barbourne Road into a Sainsbury’s Local.
The proposals, which have been tabled by Hinton Properties, had sparked fears from shop owners in the area who felt they could be forced to close their doors.
But a spokeswoman for Sainsbury’s believed the businesses will benefit from the extra footfall, which they expect the store to generate.
She confirmed it would create 25 jobs, while the plans also include the creation of a 12-space car park at the rear of the site. This would be provided once a group of run-down buildings, which are currently used as offices, are demolished.
A spokeswoman for Sainsbury’s added: “The application has been submitted by Hinton Properties and includes plans to refurbish the former In-Toto building and replace it with a Sainsbury’s Local.
“Sainsbury’s Locals are not full size supermarkets, but are smaller convenience stores, which are designed for people who wish to top up their weekly shop or simply pop in for the odd item.
“The store will offer quality food and additional choice for people living in the area. Businesses around the store will benefit from the extra footfall, as the store will help people keep shopping locally.
“We have also written to local people to inform them of our proposals.”
