Drunken man has to pay for damaged cars

A DRUNK man who damaged three cars in a late night wrecking spree has been given a 12-month community order.

Shane Smith, of Chedworth Close, Worcester, was also ordered to pay £1,139.56 in compensation, court costs and victim surcharges, have six months supervision to take the anger management workbook and undertake 100 hours of unpaid work after pleading guilty to three counts of criminal damage.

The incidents happened just after 10.10pm on December 8 when the 26-year-old was seen walking down Friar Street damaging the wing mirrors of a silver Ford Focus, a silver Volkswagen Touran and a silver Volkswagen Golf.

On Friday (February 7) Worcester Magistrates Court heard Smith had visited the pub after playing football, drunk ten pints and let his emotions get the better of him.

Officers received a call to say a number of vehicles had been damaged, and managed to locate Smith on CCTV cameras before arresting him.

The court also heard how during his interview, Smith was described as being very remorseful and fully admitted causing the damage.

David Oliverre, defending solicitor, said: “It’s fair to say Mr Smith’s acts on this occasion were deplorable.

“This is his first appearance before the court and that is punishment and a sobering experience in itself. On this particular evening he has drunk to excess and lashed out at a number of cars belonging to innocent people.

“He previously attended anger management counselling but due to lack of numbers interested in the sessions it was stopped. He felt it benefited him even from the two sessions he attended.”

Smith was ordered to pay £277.72 compensation for the Ford Focus, £373 for the Volkswagen Touran, £343.84 for the Volkswagen Golf, £85 court costs and a victim surcharge of £60.
