Work to protect water supply begins

HUNDREDS of metres of water pipes are set to be installed in St Peter’s in a bid to protect the area’s water supply.

Work has begun to dig up Worcester Road before moving onto St Peter’s Drive as engineers at Severn Trent Water look to replace 400 metres of pipes.

The water company, which are working in partnership with Worcestershire County Council, expect the project to be completed in April.

Jonathan Tait, of Severn Trent, also confirmed temporary traffic lights will be put up on the roads affected while work is being carried out.

“A lot of the water pipes in the area have been serving the community for many years,” he said.

“This means they’ve become old and prone to bursting, which can interrupt our customers’ water supply.

“In total we’re laying 400 metres of new water pipes to replace the old ones, which is about the length of four football pitches.

“The first part of the work has just started on Worcester Road and then we will move onto St Peter’s Drive.

“The water supply shouldn’t be interrupted, but if it is customers will be given plenty of notice, so that they can plan ahead.

He added: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused to the community, but our priority is to give the best service we can to our customers.  The work will only be for a short time, but the benefits should be felt for years to come.”
