We will remember them

Worcester Editorial 12th Nov, 2013 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

THE CITY fell silent on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day as hundreds of people lined the streets of Worcester to remember those who had lost their lives in conflict.

Worcester Cathedral was packed with veterans, current servicemen, dignitaries and members of the public as a service, led by The Dean of Worcester, the Very Reverend Peter Atkinson, was followed by the traditional wreath laying ceremony at the war memorial.

Standards were then lowered at 11am, before a two minute silence which ended with the firing of a gun and the Last Post.

Wreaths were laid by dignitaries including city MP Robin Walker and Mayor of Worcester, Coun Pat Agar.

A number of groups and organisations including contingents from 214 Battery RA, Royal British Legion, Worcesters & Forsters Regimental Association, Navy, Army and Air Force Cadets, the police, firefighters, St John’s Ambulance, Red Cross, Scouts and Guides, then took place in a parade through the city centre.

Further parades and services took place in St Johns and Claines.

On Monday (November 11), Armistice Day, the end of the First World War was marked with another wreath laying service and two minutes silence at the Cathedral.
